Right rear door latch, exploded

The manual calls the latch the door lock actuator — the release rod, lock rod and interior cable all land on that one unit. This is the group you have to take apart to reach it. Click any part to read its catalogue number, torque value and manual page. Every view can be reached with the buttons below.

Reading your symptom

You hold the outside handle up and push the latch with a screwdriver, and the ramp then deploys. That says the handle is pulling, but the latch is not travelling all the way to its released position on its own — and the ramp interlock will not run until it sees that door fully clear. Four things can cause it, in the order worth checking.

# Suspect Why it matches, and how to tell Page
1 Door lock actuator
the latch itself
The pawl spring inside weakens or the mechanism binds, so it releases under a screwdriver but not under handle travel alone. This is the part most likely to need replacing. It is one unit — latch and actuator together, 3 screws. 1357
2 Latch release rod Runs from the outside handle down to the latch. If it has stretched, popped its clip, or sits out of adjustment, the handle moves but the latch only travels part way — exactly what you are describing. Cheap to check once the door panel is off. 1508
3 Door striker and shim If the striker sits proud or low, the latch loads up against it and will not spring back. The manual has you adjust the striker for proper opening and closing, then torque to 22 N·m. Worth ruling out before buying anything. 1501
4 Ramp switches / door signal The right rear door panel carries 2 ramp switches, and the ABC module reads door state before it will deploy. If the latch is genuinely fine, the fault is the signal rather than the mechanism. 1343

Order of disassembly

Condensed from the door lock actuator procedure, p. 1357–1361. The window has to come out — there is no shortcut to the latch.

  1. Lower the window all the way down.
  2. Remove the 7 door panel screws, release the clips, take the panel off. On the right rear door, disconnect the 2 ramp switches and the 2 light connectors first.
  3. Remove the interior beltline seal, exterior beltline seal and window seal.
  4. Depress the 2 glass retainer tabs, slide the regulator channel forward, lift the glass out through the top.
  5. Remove and disconnect the window switch bezel, then route the harness out through the regulator.
  6. Remove the window regulator, 6 bolts.
  7. Disconnect the exterior handle rod, the interior handle cable and the lock rod from the actuator, then the 2 actuator connectors.
  8. Remove the 3 screws and the door lock actuator.

This is a schematic model. Fastener counts, the linkage layout and the assembly order follow the manual; the shape of the latch casting, the handle and the striker are representative rather than measured. Use it to see how the pieces relate, not to identify a part by its silhouette.
